1 What is Cai Mon Durian?
Characteristics of Cai Mon Durian
Cai Mon Durian is a famous specialty in Ben Tre, known for its small size (1-2kg) and thin, light green peel with sparse thorns. It has a distinctive fragrance, pale yellow flesh that resembles chicken fat, small seeds, and a deliciously sweet and fatty taste.
Each Cai Mon Durian fruit usually has around 10 large lobes that fall off at noon or midnight. Thanks to advancements in technology, Cai Mon Durian can now be harvested all year round with larger fruit and thicker flesh.
Why is it called Cai Mon Durian?
Cai Mon Durian got its name from a Confucian teacher named Nguyen Duy Luu, also known as teacher Luu. He discovered this special durian variety while teaching in Cambodia and brought it back to Ben Tre. The locals were impressed by its small seeds, thick flesh, gentle fragrance, and sweet and fatty taste. They began planting it extensively and named it Cai Mon Durian after the location of teacher Luu’s garden.
2 Is Cai Mon Durian Delicious?
Cai Mon Durian, also known as “dairy milk durian,” has a gentle and sweet flavor similar to milk. Its taste is a blend of distinctive and fragrant aromas with a slightly sweet and fatty richness that will leave a lasting impression.
3 Distinctive Characteristics of Cai Mon Durian
Aside from its fragrance and sweet taste, Cai Mon Durian is known for its moderate size, thin peel, small seeds, and thick flesh. Each fruit usually has 4-5 compartments, with each compartment containing 3-4 seeds. This makes Cai Mon Durian more delicious and of higher quality compared to other varieties.
4 How to Choose Delicious Cai Mon Durian
Here are some tips for choosing delicious Cai Mon Durian:
-
Choose Cai Mon Durian with an even and round appearance. Avoid fruits that are deformed or damaged.
-
Press lightly on the stem. If you feel the moisture from the durian resin, it means the fruit is fresh.
-
Check the thorns. Fresh Cai Mon Durian has thin, large, and evenly sized thorns.
-
Shake, squeeze lightly, and tap the Cai Mon Durian. If it makes a hollow sound, it indicates the fruit has thick flesh and is fresh.
-
Choose durian with a gentle and light fragrance that is still distinctive and natural.
5 Where to Buy Cai Mon Durian and Its Price
Cai Mon Durian is available for purchase in various provinces and cities in Vietnam, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Nghe An. The price ranges from 130,000 to 250,000 VND per fruit, depending on the distance from Ben Tre to your location.
